Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced that he will no longer play One-Day International (ODI) cricket, instead focusing on Twenty20 (T20) cricket.
From 2012 to 2025, Maxwell played in 149 One-Day Internationals (ODIs). He scored 3,990 runs and took 77 wickets. He also played on Australia’s teams that won the World Cup in 2015 and 2023.
Glenn Maxwell, the world champion, quits one-day international cricket.

Maxwell got runs at a strike rate of 126.70 and an average of 33.81. He was a compelling batter.
Many people think that his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup was the best game he ever played in an ODI. Additionally, he scored 23 half-centuries and three other centuries.
He was also proficient as an off-spin bowler and got four-fers four times during his career. Besides being a great fielder, he has also caught 91 balls in this style.
Maxwell made this decision to prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka, according to Cricket Australia.
Maxwell intended to concentrate on the Big Bash League and other overseas responsibilities, the board added.
Maxwell said this about his work and his choice to retire: “I reflect on my early days; I was selected unexpectedly and ahead of my schedule.”
I felt happy because I was glad to have represented Australia in a few games. “I thought I was just going to get that.” Since then, I’ve experienced ups and downs, participated in multiple World Cups, and been part of some exceptional teams.
Maxwell last played an ODI against India earlier this year in the Champions Trophy. Maxwell can’t play in the IPL right now because he hurt his leg.
How to Overcome Team Pressure in Sports
“The way my body was responding to the conditions made me feel like I was letting the team down a bit.” He asked George Bailey, the Chair of Selectors, what he thought about the future and had a delightful conversation with him. Bailey replied to the Final Word Podcast.
“I told him, ‘I don’t think I’m going to make that 2027 World Cup.'” It’s time to start making plans for people in my situation to try their hand at it and make it their own.
We hope that they get enough of a lead-in to keep that part. I have always maintained that I wouldn’t give up my position if I believed I was still capable of playing.
“I didn’t want to do anything but wait for a few series and almost play for myself.” It is the best way for them to see their lineup before the next World Cup. “I understand how important it is to plan.”
I’d like to send my sincerest congratulations to Maxwell on his success in his job as both captain and chair of selectors. “Glenn will be known as one of the most dynamic players in one-day cricket. He played key roles in two ODI World Cup wins,” said George Bailey.
His level of skill and ability is truly amazing. His energy on the field, overlooked skill with the ball, and durability have all been outstanding.
His intense passion for Australia and desire to play for them is another characteristic that sets him apart. The good news is that he still has a lot to offer Australia in T20 cricket.
As we build up to the World Cup early next year, he will be critical if everything goes as planned.
2015 World Cup win, historic double, and memorable scenes, Maxwell Glenn
In New Delhi, after he stopped playing ODIs, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell said that his 201 off 128 balls against Afghanistan in the 2023 Cricket World Cup and his fantastic performance in the 2015 World Cup final were the highlights of his career.
After playing 149 games for Australia, Maxwell announced his retirement from one-day international cricket on Monday.
He has played 149 times since making his debut in August 2012. He has taken 77 wickets and scored 3,990 runs.
Maxwell was an all-rounder who won the ICC Cricket World Cup twice, in 2015 and 2023. His last ODI match was earlier this year in the ICC Champions Trophy, which was against India.
In 2015, the 36-year-old made his first appearance in the World Cup. In the Melbourne final, he assisted Australia in defeating New Zealand. That moment was an “amazing memory” for him.
“Finchy” and I were the only Victorians on the team, and we hoped to make it to the final.
The final choice made it feel right. It’s not often that someone can win the World Cup at home in front of their family and friends.
We were fortunate to accomplish it.
The festivities continued for a few days. It’s unquestionably a fantastic occasion. Maxwell told SEN that winning the wonderful ODI World Cup match at home is a fantastic way to remember the event.

How Did Australia Achieve Victory in a Challenging Match?
In the 2023 Cricket World Cup in Mumbai, he played his most famous One-Day International (ODI) match against Afghanistan. He hit a perfect 201 from 128 balls, despite having terrible cramps, which helped Australia reach their goal of 293 from 91/7.
“As a person, I don’t think you could have a more special moment when everything seems to be just right.”
Everything ultimately aligns for the greater good. Everything ultimately aligns for the greater good. Simply be yourself and put your all into it.
