KARACHI: Sana Mir, who was the captain of the Pakistan women’s cricket team, became the first woman from her country to be inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame on Monday.

At a gathering before the World Test Championship final, West Indies legend Ian Bishop introduced seven new members. This is where the news was shared.

She was admitted alongside classmates from 2025, including MS Dhoni of India, Sarah Taylor of England, Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith of South Africa, Matthew Hayden of Australia, and Daniel Vettori of New Zealand.

The former off-spinning all-rounder played for Pakistan for about 15 years.

She is one of only 14 women to have won the award, and she is the eighth Pakistani overall to achieve this distinction.

During her 15-year international career from 2005 to 2019. She changed the way women played cricket in Pakistan and set many records. In 2018, she became the first Pakistani woman to be ranked number one in ICC ODI bowling.

With 151 wickets, she is still Pakistan’s top wicket-taker in women’s ODIs. She was also the first Asian woman to play in 100 T20 internationals.

Mir was captain of Pakistan for eight years and led the team to two gold medals at the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014. He also led the team to five T20 World Cups and two ODI World Cups.

Pakistan’s first ODI win against South Africa and qualifying for the 2017 World Cup Super Sixes, where her 5/14 against Scotland was the deciding factor, were both big moments in her leadership.

Sana Mir: The first Pakistani woman cricket player to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.

“As a little girl, I dreamed that one day there would be a women’s team in our country. To be standing here, among the legends I looked up to long before I ever held a bat or a ball, is a moment I never would have dared to imagine,” she told the ICC.

“This honor means a lot to me, and I hope to give back to the sport in any way I can.” I want to thank my family, coaches, and friends for all the support they have provided me over the years.

In 2019, Sana Mir quit as one of Pakistan’s most decorated athletes. She had also been a strong voice for women’s sports and mental health.

Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Javed Miandad, Abdul Qadir, Zaheer Abbas, Waqar Younis, and Hanif Mohammad are the other seven Pakistani bowlers who are already in the Hall of Fame. Mir is the eighth.

“Some of the most famous cricket players in history are in the Hall of Fame. They have all done great things.” He told the ICC, “This kind of recognition feels unbelievable, and I’m very grateful.”

The ICC called Smith “a great opening batter and arguably an even better captain.” They also stated that Vettori was a reliable and skilled all-rounder, as well as a great leader.

At the same time, Taylor was called “one of the most talented female players in recent memory.”
